Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the Environmental Movement that started in 1970. Today it is recognized as the largest secular observance in the world, with over a billion people (and companies – not a billion but still a significant amount) using Earth Day as a day of action to change human behaviour and create global, national, and local policy changes.
In today’s world, the social and cultural environments that saw the rise of Earth Day in 1970 are once again stirred up by a fresh and frustrated generation of young people that recognize that the destruction of the planet means the destruction of not only their future but their children’s future.
Digital and social media has opened up conversations in this space and has allowed for brands to communicate to their target audiences how they are using implementing policies and actions that align with the goals of Earth Day. It is essentially the perfect way to ride the PR wave if your organization is already involved in green action initiatives.

We’re going to start this list off with a comedic one. This is from Wherefrom, a crowd-sourced sustainability review platform.
Wherefrom used Earth Day to call out brands and marketers that take advantage of Earth Day to make misleading claims about their environmental or ethical credentials. They refer to this as greenwashing.
This ad campaign was called Stop the Wash and its very effective in getting their message across by being direct, hilarious at the same time.
YouTube – Non-Fungible Planet
YouTube celebrated Earth Day this year by inviting viewers and their favourite creators to explore our Non-Fungible Planet.
This was a great way to draw attention by creating an easy event for creators to create content for and to educate users on environmental issues.
Points also go to YouTube for jumping on the crypto bandwagon and utilizing the hype that Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT) have received lately.
Back Market – Hack Market
Back Market is a leading online marketplace dedicated to refurbished devices. For Earth Day, they decided to “hack” Apple’s airdrop technology to broadcast green messages inside Apple Stores. So basically they sent messages to potential buyers inside the store telling them that refurbished devices are a more ecological and cheaper way to consume technology.
Excellent showcase of how a brand’s alternative consumption model correlates with green action initiatives.
Vertical Bike powered by Honda
Every year, over a million trees are cut down in the Peruvian Amazon in order to harvest the aguaje fruit. These trees are about 35 meters high, making them very difficult to reach so cutting them down is the fastest way to get the fruit.
Ogilvy Peru came up with a solution to this environmental disaster, the “Vertical Bike”. Harvesters are able to climb up the tree using the vertical bike so they can avoid cutting down the tree. Genius solution. Genius Ad.
